Overview
A good dashboard answers a question at a glance. This Track teaches you to model data properly, write reliable metrics, choose the right chart, and design dashboards people actually use.
Each Cohort works in one tool, Power BI or Tableau, so you go deep instead of wide. The ideas transfer, and you finish with a dashboard you present to a mock stakeholder panel.
This Track is for you if you
- Can query or prepare data and want to communicate it clearly
- Want to move into BI, reporting, or business-facing analyst roles
- Build reports today and want them to look and work professionally
It is not designed for
- Graphic design or illustration
- Learners new to data (start with Track 1 or Track 2)
What You Will Learn
- Connect a BI tool to data and build a clean data model
- Write measures for common business metrics, including time comparisons
- Choose charts that fit the question, and avoid misleading visuals
- Design dashboards that are clear, consistent, and accessible
- Add filters, drill-through, and tooltips without clutter
- Tell a data story: context, insight, and a recommended action
- Present to a non-technical audience and handle their questions
Track Outline
Learn the fundamentals, build with realistic data, and excel by presenting your work.
-
Week 1
Learn
Dashboards, tools, and data connections
What makes a dashboard useful; connect to data; prepare it for analysis.
-
Weeks 2–3
Learn
Building the data model
Relationships, star schemas, and a date table so every number adds up.
-
Weeks 4–5
Build
Calculations and metrics
Measures, year-to-date, and period-over-period comparisons. Mini-project 1 due in week 5.
-
Weeks 6–7
Build
Visual design and interactivity
Chart choice, layout, color, and accessibility; filters, drill-through, and tooltips.
-
Week 8
Build
Data storytelling
Headlines, annotations, and presenting to non-technical audiences. Mini-project 2 due in week 8.
-
Weeks 9–10
Excel
Capstone
Build a three-page dashboard and present it to a mock stakeholder panel.
Assessment and Certificate
| Component | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly build labs | 20% | Hands-on builds, with feedback |
| Short quizzes | 15% | Check your grasp of key ideas |
| Mini-projects (2) | 25% | Written comments and one resubmission on each |
| Capstone | 40% | Dashboard plus a stakeholder presentation |
Certificate of completion: awarded to learners who score 70% or higher with an acceptable capstone. You get written comments on projects, an answer key for practice sets, and one resubmission on each mini-project.
What you will build
Design a three-page executive dashboard (overview, drivers, and detail) on a realistic dataset, document your metrics, and present it to a mock stakeholder panel. You keep the dashboard and a PDF export as portfolio pieces.
